Purpose: This program seeks to recruit and retain scientists from Primarily Undergraduate Institutions (PUIs) into the maize research community by encouraging their attendance at the annual Maize Genetics Meeting. The program provides an opportunity for awardees to learn about maize genetics through connecting with scientists in the maize genetics community, explore potential collaborations, and develop career contacts. Awards can be applied to the cost of registration, food, lodging and reimbursement for travel expenses. During the conference, PUI awardees will be welcomed by the maize community, and will have opportunities to interact with peers, invited speakers, and program officers from public funding agencies.
PUI applicants should 1) fill out the application form, 2) submit a CV or résumé, and 3) student applicants must provide the name and email address of at least one referee, who must be a research mentor, collaborator, or faculty supervisor. Faculty applicants are not required to provide a referee. Eligible applicants include: undergraduate students currently enrolled at a PUI and PUI faculty. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the USA. First-time conference attendees are encouraged to apply.
Deadline: For full consideration, PUI applications should be submitted by December 2.
Previous maize genetics research experience is not required to apply for a PUI award but some plant biology or genetics-related research experience will make a stronger application. Submitting an abstract to present a research poster or talk is recommended, even if it is not directly relevant to maize genetics. Abstract submission will be open until January 17. Details can be found on the Abstract/Program page. Applicants that do not have a final title for their abstract when submitting the PUI application should submit a provisional title.
For direct questions regarding the award please contact Mark Lubkowitz, [email protected]. For technical questions about submitting applications please contact John Portwood, [email protected].
The PUI award of the Maize Genetics Meeting is supported by the National Science Foundation.
